The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) is a five-year project that aims to support the development of government-led health learning platforms that draw on implementation research tohelp inform efforts to build enduring and resilient health systems. It is designed to the use existing health data, implementation research methods, and research training to improve the quality and effectiveness of health services and health service delivery.
African HIE Maturity Assessment
The Africa CDC developed a strategic plan to develop and strengthen information systems to support public health strategies in Africa. It also sets a strategic objective of designing and implementing a continental data-sharing platform for Member States.To achieve this objective, Africa CDC has drafted an African Union (AU) Health Information Exchange (HIE) Policy and Standard document for Member States to exchange health information. Global Digital Health Exemplars
The Center for Global Digital Health Innovation (CGDHI) based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and eHealth Lab Ethiopia based at the University of Gondar is working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to understand which countries have been able to successfully leverage digital solutions to transform PHC service delivery – and the facilitators and challenges experienced in their paths. This work is part of the larger Exemplars in Global Health initiative. To support this work, we are engaging stakeholders from countries that can benefit from the findings and adapt them for their country contexts.
EMR Development and Implementation
In the past many years, Ethiopia had made efforts to implement EMR systems at various public health facilities. However, the implementation efforts have been unsuccessful in all but a few health facilities. Training and follow-up, lack of management commitment, poor ICT infrastructure, and hardware and software-related issues were presumed to be the challenges that contributed to the EMR implementation failure. In addition, the absence of a national EMR implementation roadmap that guides the overall EMR implementation had contributed to the implementation failure of EMR systems.
